The village is named after the plant ‘fterikin’ that grows in abundance in the area. It is believed that the village was built to replace the village of Kalamithasa which was destroyed by the Ottoman Turks after the locals sided with the Venetians in a battle against the Ottomans. It is also said that Saint Avacum, one of the Alamani Saints, lived in the area. The village still has many of its traditional houses. If you wish to take a break from driving there are a couple of coffee shops in the village square.
