The monastery was first built in the 6th century. The church of the monastery is deticated to Virgin Mary the Acheiropoiitos. The moonastery is located near the ruins of ancient Lambousa near Lapithos.
The church has preserved parts of earlier constructions and Vyzantine wall paintings. The monastery was looted in the 18th century. The miraculas icon of Virgin Mary is believed to contain part of ”Ayio Mandilion” as mensioned in the icon description.
During the Turkish occupation the monastery served as the educational and cultural center of the whole area. During the Greek indepedence uprising of 1821 the monastery made its own contribution. In the greekcypriot uprising of EOKA Grigoris Afxentiou number two in the EOKA organization married Vasiliki at the monastery. Today, because of the continuing Turkish occupation the Monastery is out of use.
