18TH OF APRIL 2012
THEME: WORLD HERITAGE AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
THE ROLE OF LOCAL COMMUNITIES
This theme was chosen to highlight the relationship between World Heritage and Sustainable Development. The aim is to demonstrate that the participation of local communities in the management of World Heritage Properties can and should be positive. The inscription of a site in the World Heritage List bounds both the responsible authorities, as well as local communities for its protection. Local communities as one of the main stakeholders have both benefits and responsibilities deriving from the inscription of a site on the List and their voice is crucial.
