The three centuries of Frankish Cyprus (1142-1489) as troubled and had brought the first real urbanization of Nicosia.
At the core of a rudimentary urban fabric between the houses there were still large tracts of arable land.
Between 1320 and 1380 story that attempted the first substantial fortifications of Nicosia, but is rather uncertain whether it was ever completed.
Generally the medieval walls were tall, upright, without internal reinforcement and”fortress”yard had in small spaces tall towers.
Such architectural construction, however, effectively respond to conventional weapons of the era: the bow, the spear, the ram and siege machines, instruments of war were rather small range.
The medieval walls of Nicosia is not saved. We know only from descriptions of modern browsers, and some maps other than place names indicate, reflect, and important medieval buildings.
In 1368 King Peter the First, began building a large and labyrinthine fortress, with strong underground prison, a place near the palace, where today stands the Kasteliotissa.
The fort was named Margarita.
The low hill is still here, indicates that the palace and the castle was built on a hill dominating the surrounding area.
The King wished to inmates there fraudulently many enemies, and some dangerous relatives. Did not succeed though.
In this fort a year later (16/01/1369) killed himself King.
