Loukia and Michael Zambela Art Museum
Loukia and Michael Zampelas Art Museum, a pioneer museum in its field, exhibits modern and contemporary art of Cypriots and foreign artists. Situated in Kaimakli, it is located very close to the centre of Nicosia and the walled city – the cultural hub of the island.
The founders of the Museum, Michael and Loukia Zampelas, have been collecting and supporting the work of many Cypriot, Greek and foreign artists for a period of over forty years. Their love for art and the artists in general, initiated, at the turn of the Millennium, their desire to promote the work of upcoming as well as established artists and display it to the public. In order to do this, the company Zampelas Art was founded.
An open call for a competition to create a catalogue of the 100 best Cypriot artists of the 3rd Millennium became the first venture of Zampelas Art. Art critics from the UK, Italy, Greece and Cyprus studied the 500 submitted works and selected 100 of these to include in the catalogue: “Cypriot Artists of the 3rd Millenium”. This catalogue can be found in many museum libraries around the world.
Zampelas Art went ahead and acquired all the art works of the competition, aspiring in the future to establish an Art Museum which would promote cultural development in Cyprus. These works now form part of the collection of the Zampelas family which has expanded to include almost 1000 works of Cypriot, Greek and foreign artists, from 1877 to the present.
In May 2012, the Loukia and Michael Zampelas Art Museum opened up its doors to the public. The Museum is a non-profit private organisation which houses the permanent collection of the Zampelas family. Apart from the permanent collection, the Museum also organises temporary, retrospective and thematic exhibitions of artists from Cyprus and abroad. These are complemented with relevant educational programmes, lectures and other cultural activities. Education is a core objective of the Loukia and Michael Zampelas Art Museum, which offers numerous educational programmes catered specifically to this. The Museum also offers some of its spaces for conferences and cultural events, and organises various events on the Museum’s premises. The various events, together with the organised Museum tours and educational programmes, facilitate learning and bring to the public the timeless achievements of Cypriot, Greek and foreign art.
The Loukia and Michael Zampelas Art Museum is a pioneer in its field, showcasing modern and contemporary art in Cyprus. Situated in Kaimakli, it is located very close to the centre of Nicosia and the walled city – the cultural hub of the island. Its location is pivotal and signifies another objective of the Museum: the cultural regeneration of Kaimakli and the nearby areas, creating a new chapter for the cultural development and history of the island.
Michalakis and Loukia Zampelas are the creators and founders of the Loukia and Michael Zampelas Art Museum, and the driving force behind Zampelas Art.
Alongside Michalakis Zampelas’s professional activities (including the establishment, presidency and management in Cyprus of the world-renowned Coopers & Lybrand – renamed PricewaterhouseCoopers – his vital contribution to the enhancement of the image of the accounting profession in Cyprus etc.), he has been working tirelessly to promote Cyprus internationally, focusing upon the financial rejuvenation of Cyprus following the Turkish invasion.
Furthermore, amongst other activities, Michalakis Zampelas served as Mayor of Nicosia from 2002 to 2006 with tireless creativity and extensive social service. In addition to this, since 1997, he is the Consul General of Estonia in Cyprus. Loukia Zampelas is also actively involved in the community, constantly contributing to its welfare.
An equally important passion for Michalakis and Loukia Zampelas is art. For more than forty years they have been collecting works of art, particularly those by Cypriot artists.
Their love for art led them to envisage and establish the company Zampelas Art Ltd., and subsequently open an Art Museum in Kaimakli, the oldest suburb of Nicosia. With the Art Museum serving as its base and with the ambition to make art accessible to all, Zampelas Art creates, along the way, trade names under the names Zmart, Zmart Framing, Zmart Gallery, Zmart Shop and Zmart Café. In addition to these, having acknowledged that a primary objective of the Art Museum and centre is education, Zampelas Art created Zmart Education, which offers a range of educational programmes. Moreover, the electronic publication of the academic Journal of Arts as well as numerous other beautiful projects for the progression and spread of art are still to come.
The Loukia and Michael Zampelas Art Museum reflects the desire of Michalakis and Loukia Zampelas to contribute to local art and cultural events, to bring art closer to their fellow citizens, and to exhibit the beauty of Cypriot heritage to the wider world, leaving an “eternal treasure” in Cyprus and abroad.
