Cyprus is a small, heavenly island that bathes in the blue waters of the Eastern Mediterranean. Here the sun is strong, the sky is clear, and the land is fertile. In the land of Cyprus grow the olive, locust, and lemon trees, and the grapevines. The grapevines are in blossom and their wines are sweet to drink. A large mountainous region of the Limassol district is covered with vines. It is the known region of the wine-producing villages with the famous, traditional, vintage wines. Kilani stands out amongst these wine-making villages.
The Museum of Viticulture is a sample of Kilani’s traditional residence. Built with stone and clay mud, with huge, thick walls, roofed with balks and a heavy housetop, with a paved floor and yard, it is placed facing eastwards. The rooms, built in a row without a complicated arrangement, are illuminated only via the door and not from the windows. It should be noted that these three rooms belonged to three owners and were three separate houses. In the same room that the people slept were the earthen jars with their products and -many times -the animals also lived there; a taste of rough times, poverty, and deprivation.
Tools of viticulture are exhibited in the three halls of the museum. These tools are the result of an age-long, practical need and of experience that the human mind conquered.
They are samples of folklore culture, of the ingenuity of the era’s people, and they are part of the cultural inheritance of Cyprus. Many of these tools are still used today.
Tools that had to do with planting and growing the vine are exhibited in the first hall.
In the second hall the tools on display were used for the processing of the grape and the production of various products.
Tools related to the whole wine-making process, which was the village’s basic product from which the inhabitants secured their livelihood, are found in the third hall.
Outside the third hall is a caldron with which the distillation of “Zivania” was done.
