The National Struggle Museum EOKA 1955 – 1959 in Nicosia honoured International Museum Day on 18 May by projecting a short documentary on the National Liberation Movement of 1955 – 1959 and organising guided tours for its visitors.
The 25-minute film, written by Yiannis Chr. Spanos and directed by Andy Roditis, took visitors step by step through the historical fight put up by our national heroes against the British rule. The documentary was supported by the Culture and the Council of Historical Memory of the Liberation Struggle of EOKA 1955 – 1959.
The museum is located in the square near the Holy Archbishopric of Cyprus in Nicosia and displays documents, photographic material, personal belongings of the heroes and other memorabilia related to the liberation movement against the British rule.
The museum was founded two years after the end of the 1955 – 1959 National Liberation Movement by EOKA fighter Christodoulos Papachrysostomou, following a decision by the Greek Communal Chamber. The decision was taken on 26 January 1961 and was published in the Cyprus Govermment Gazette on 23 February of the same year.
The museum is now housed at its new premises, inaugurated on 30 April 2001. The expenses for building the museum were covered by the Holy Archbishopric of Cyprus and the Cyprus Ministry of Education and Culture. In 2011, the museum welcomed 27.000 visitors.
Keeping the memory alive
The newly designed museum is effectively a historical-scientific centre, which through its new technology and multimedia, comprise an information centre. The museum was designed as a tribute and a reminder of the duties of future generations of Cypriots, with the aim of spreading the memory of the National Liberation Movement.
The EOKA Museum interprets and brings to life, in the most vivid manner, the EOKA movement and the liberation campaign. The effective mouth-piece of this live impression is the depiction of events through exhibited photographs, combined with texts, either from leaflets, commands, orders and instructions by the Organisation, or through personal experiences, national concerns and religious convictions. The projection of films on Cyprus history, with specialreference to the EOKA period, is also part of the museum’s technological services.
