The legendary Boeing 727 of Olympic Airways finds its own home on Vouliagmenis Avenue
Specifically, the historic aircraft, purchased in 1968 by Aristotle Onassis for the fleet of Olympic Airways
The iconic Boeing 727 of Olympic Airways, which had been abandoned at the Ellinikon Airport after its last flight in 2001, is now acquiring its own home. Specifically, the historic aircraft, purchased in 1968 by Aristotle Onassis for the fleet of Olympic Airways, will now adorn Vouliagmenis Avenue, giving the opportunity for the public, especially young people, to travel back in time and discover the world of the aviation industry.
The Boeing 727 of Olympic Airways, along with a BAC1-11 in the colours of the Hellenic Air, were recently purchased by the Cypriot company Zela Aviation, who had also added the Zela Aviation logo and the Cyprus flag on the aircraft. After being maintained and refurbished, the BAC1-11, one of the few aircraft of its type worldwide, was donated to the Municipality of Lavrio and placed next to the city’s port, in December 2023.
The Boeing 727 of Olympic Airways was transported this March 2024 to Vouliagmenis Avenue and is expected to be officially presented to the public this May 2024, during an official ceremony, in the presence of officials from the Greek government.
Andreas Christodoulides, Chairman of Zela Aviation, who personally undertook the entire project, stated that these two aircraft are part of the history of Greek aviation. My goal, he said, was for these two significant artifacts to be placed on public view, so that the world will remember Ellinikon Airport, Olympic Airways, and its founder, Aristotle Onassis, whom I greatly admire.
