Discovering Kornos – The Village of Clay
The picturesque Larnaka village of Kornos is located close to the centre of Larnaka, Lefkosia (Nicosia) and Lemesos (Limassol), perched amidst hillsides of olive, pine and eucalyptus trees. It is most famous for its traditional clay pottery, which was once the main occupation of the village’s inhabitants, and an art that is still practised today.
As a place to visit, Kornos has plenty of interesting sites and natural beauty spots, and a new map comprehensively details everything you can see and do. The map – entitled ‘Kornos, The Village of the Red Clay – introduces the village and describes it’s main features such as churches, workshops, picnic spots, lakes, caves and even electromagnetic phenomenon.
Naturally, there are workshops where visitors can see the world-famous pottery being made, but that is not the only craft the villagers practise; porcelain dolls, cheese, icons, traditional jewellery, mosaics and confectionary are all lovingly made by hand on premises which welcome visitors.
The village has no less than 11 churches and monasteries – each with a unique history and architecture. The main church is Timios Prodromou, which is honoured on August 29 each year with village celebrations.
The new map is a handy guide to a traditional and quaint village that is truly worth a visit, and can be downloaded directly here.
