Kassahun and Soteriou finish first at the ‘7th annual 15-km, ‘Garmin Troodos Green Race 2016’
Dro.Me.A. Racing’s Maria Soteriou and Kassahun Jebel (Dro.Me.A and GSP) were the overall winners in the women’s and men’s divisions respectively at the ‘Garmin Troodos 15-km Green Race.’
The event, which was organized for the 7th consecutive year by Dro.Me.A Racing runners’ club was a challenging test of physical and mental abilities. It required endurance, strength, focus, specific techniques and technical skills, due to the uneven terrain of the unique Troodos natural trails, the high altitude and the long distance. The exceptional effort exerted by all runners was rewarded with an unmatched elation at the finish line. Runners meandered through the breathtaking nature trails of Troodos and ‘conquered’ the ‘Olympus’ peak experiencing an adrenaline rush, which only this sport may provide.
‘The race seems to attract more and more participants year after year, which is a mental reward for all those who devote their time and effort in the organization of a successful event,’ said Nicos Sourmelis the race director.
The aims of the event were to raise awareness for the protection of Cyprus’ forests and natural reserves as well as to create opportunities for social sport in nature. The event also supported the Erasmus Plus action, ‘Safe You’ campaign, which aims at raising awareness against the use of prohibited substances in sport.
In addition to the overall winners, honors were received by Ekaterina Bobrovnik who finished 2nd and Nayia Modestou (AEAK) who finished 3rd, in the women’s event as well as Oscar Sosa (Dro.Me.A Racing – GSP) who was 2nd and Javier Marelli who was 3rd (Periklis Demetriou) in the men’s division.
Following the race, the award ceremony took place. The medals were presented to the winners by Dr. Michael Michaelides, representative of Erasmus Plus ‘Safe You’ action in Cyprus and Mr. Evgenios Petrides on behalf of Garmin.
Garmin was the major event sponsor. Other sponsors included Erasmus Plus ‘Safe You and Webarts. The event was also supported by Saucony, Marathon Trading, Bike Hub, AWOL, Nomadic State of Mind, Prive Sports, eshopforpsorts, Theopisti Bakeries and P.T. Mountain Sports & Rescue Ltd.
