Part of the Archbishop’s Palace, the apartment where Archbishop Makarios III spent is last years, features memorabilia of his turbulent life.
Archbishop Makarios III was born in Panagia Village Paphos district , on August 13, 1913.
After studying theology and law in Athens and the United States of America he returned to Cyprus and served as Bishop of Kitium and Archbishop of Cyprus.
He was exiled from Cyprus by the British but after his return to the island he was elected First President of the Republic of Cyprus 1960. A military coup staged by the junta that ruled Greece forced him to leave Cyprus. Returning to the island he assumend his duties as President until his death in 1977.
