What should I do in Torremolinos?
Torremolinos is situated in Spain’s gloriously sizzling Costa del Sol, and is known for its clean sandy beaches and buzzing nightlife. It shot to popularity in the 60s with the rise of the package holiday, and just 7 km from Malaga Airport, it’s easy to see why it’s still so popular today. But Torremolinos has managed to shake off its package holiday image in recent years, and is enjoying a second wave of popularity as people surge to relax on the beautiful beaches and busy bars.
Travel like a star
There is a lot more to Torremolinos than meets the eye. It’s most famous for its stretches of white beaches which were a hit with 50s stars Marlon Brando, Frank Sinatra and Grace Kelly, all of whom visited Torremolinos. Feel like a celebrity yourself with the biggest sunglasses you can find and the best spot on the beach, ideally with a cocktail in hand to make the most of the stunning sunshine. The Playa de Bajondillo Los Alamos and Montemar are among the most popular beaches in Torremolinos, with a pretty seafront promenade providing the best route from beach to beach.
Quaint La Carihuela
La Carihuela is in stark contrast to Torremolinos’ high rise hotels and throng of crowds. It is the old centre of the fishing village, with bougainvillea-adorned houses lining the tiny streets of picturesque fishing cottages. Be sure to say ‘hola’ to the friendly residents, who can often be spotted relaxing outside their houses enjoying a glass or two of wine in the sun. In particular, this part of town is fantastic for its traditional seafood restaurants where you can sample some of the Costa del Sol’s local delicacies.
The great outdoors
In recent years, lots of attractive public gardens have been springing up across Torremolinos, where residents and visitors alike congregate to enjoy the weather and the lively atmosphere. Flower fans will be pleased to spend time in green spaces covered in swathes of roses, azaleas and delicate magnolia. For those wanting to see more of this side of Torremolinos, the outskirts are flanked with forests which are great for ramblers and people who enjoy the quieter side of life, so it’s worth hiring a car to get out and explore this serene part of town.
Torremolinos’ party scene
The beach bars come alive in the summer, and there are always the multiple nightclubs if you’re looking to let your hair down. If nightlife is your thing, you could always head into Malaga to take advantage of its notoriously wild club scene to party the night away. Benalmadena is just a short distance away too if you want a change of scene.
If you want a blend of a pretty old town, brilliant beaches and a prime location on Spain’s beach resort hive, the Costa del Sol, you should give Torremolinos a go. It just might surprise you.
