With over 60.000 exhibits belonging to Carlos Slim, the Soumaya Museum is named after the Mexican magnate’s late wite and features exceptional works of art, historical documents, religious relics and coin collections.
Its relocation to Plaza Carso was funded by the Carlos Slim Foundation, whose benefactor is reported to be the wealthiest man in the world. At a cost of $70 million, the new building opened its doors to the public in March 2011, offering six floors of art by celebrated European artists from the 15th to 20th centuries.
The museum’s silvery, flowing form seems to take inspiration from a Rodin sculpture, many of whose works are included in the museum’s collection. Designed by Mexican architect Fernando Romero, who is married to Carlos Slim’s daughter, the building offers 17,000 square metres of exhibition space, hosting works by Salvador Dali, Cezanne, Renoir, Matisse, Leonardo Da Vinci, El Greco, Monet, Diego Rivera and historical documents by Hernan Cortes and Chrostopher Columbus.
